10 Tips For Working Remote
I've been working from home for about a year now and have to admit I love the commute. I've quickly learned a few things and thought I would share a few tips. With that my top 10 tips for working remote.
1.) Get dressed. This may sound silly but keeping a routine as if you're actually "going into the office is an important step. Not only that this will also help with step number 5.
2.) Set up an area used exclusively for work. This will help you psychologically separate from your home and work life. Not only that but you may be able to deduct your workspace from your taxes. I am by far a tax pro so I would ask your accountant. Also, spend a little money fixing up your office. A little art on the walls and a comfortable chair will go a long way.
3.) Stay out of the fridge. Forget about the freshmen 15. I was quite surprised by how many times I walked downstairs from my office to open the fridge just because it was there. Don't change your eating habits. It should actually be much easier to have a larger selection of healthy choices.
4.) Make a stoplight system. I have two kids and keeping them out of my office proved to be challenging. I am adding a green light / red light sign to my office door. I've heard this works quite well. I will keep everyone posted.
5.) Get out of the house. When I first started working from home I very rarely left the house. Take a lunch go for a walk just get out! Get up early and work the morning from a coffee shop.
6.) Set actual work hours One of the great things about working from home is also one of the bad things about working from home you never get to leave work. With that, I make every effort to start at stop work like I would if I were heading into a 'normal' office.
7.) Get in-person time with co-workers/boss Once a week I try to grab lunch with a few co-workers. Perhaps, once a month I will drive into one of our local offices.
8.) Keep a clean desk Maybe it's just me but clutter is very distracting. I seem to be more productive when I have a nice clean desk. It only takes something small to prevent you from maximizing your output. So clean that desk up!! Even being remote I also try to follow the clean desk policies.
9.) You're not at home you're at work. Don't answer the door or your personal phone during work hours. Try not to schedule appointments for things like lawn, plumber during work hours. This will also help re-enforce you're at work with family and friends. You have no idea how many times I've heard oh you "work from home" eh (using overly exaggerated finger quotes) while giving me the wink wink nod nod.
10.) Every once in a while forget all these tips and never ever take working remotely / from home for granted.
